New Rule for UK Driving Tests Starts on June 9

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has a new rule for driving tests in England, Scotland, and Wales. Learner drivers should know how this affects their test booking.
This new rule starts soon across England, Scotland, and Wales. Until June 8, people can book their test at any test centre.
From June 9, learners can only reschedule their test at the original centre or one of the three nearest centres.
If drivers want to change their test centre, they can make one more change to choose from the three nearest centres. This gives learners another option.
Learners can use their second chance to go back to their original test location. There have been other changes to the driving test booking system this spring.
Driving test centre changes start on June 9.
Since May 12, only learners can book and manage their practical test. Before, instructors could book tests for their pupils. Now, learners must plan with their instructor.
In March 2026, a new limit was set on how many times a test date can be changed without extra cost. Learners can now only change their test date twice.
All new driving test rules start on June 9 in England, Scotland, and Wales. Check with your instructor before booking your test.
Learners should ask their instructor for their reference number and choose a time and date that works for both. Only book at a centre you plan to use.
This change may affect learner drivers' tests.
It's a good idea to know which nearby test centres you can use, in case you need to change your test time. Some learners book tests outside their area for an earlier slot or a less busy location.
The DVSA advises learners to stay in their local area, as unfamiliar roads can make the test harder.
The GOV.UK website says to choose a date you think you'll be ready for. You can only make two changes to your test appointment.
The GOV.UK website lists what counts as a change to your test.
If you need a third change, you'll have to cancel your test and book a new one. You'll get a full refund if you cancel at least ten working days before your test.
