Urgent Deadline for Car Finance Compensation

Financial expert Martin Lewis recently discussed the issue of mis-sold car finance on television, highlighting the need for those affected to take action.

Lewis provided an update on the car finance compensation case, which involves thousands of vehicles purchased between 2007 and 2024 that may have been subject to unfair financial agreements.

The Financial Conduct Authority has set aside approximately £8 billion to compensate those affected, with an estimated 14 million agreements potentially breached, and an average payout of around £700 per person expected.

The FCA's consultation on the matter concluded in December 2025, and the regulator is set to outline its approach to motor finance redress on March 30, after which firms will have a few months to prepare for the compensation process.

According to the Money-Saving Expert Website, firms will have an initial period to prepare for the compensation process, after which those who have already complained will be notified of any redress they are owed and paid by the end of 2026.

The scandal relates to the mis-selling of finance for certain vehicles, including cars, vans, and motorbikes, purchased through Personal Contract Purchase or Hire Purchase agreements.

To be eligible for compensation, certain conditions must have been met, including the presence of a DCA that was not properly disclosed, and the agreement must have been made between 2007 and 2024.

Only one of these conditions needs to have been met for a person to be eligible for compensation, and it is likely that many people will be owed money as a result.

Martin Lewis has stated that while the regulator's redress scheme is one option for seeking compensation, court action is also a possibility, which could result in higher payouts, but also involves higher fees.
