UK Government Updates Personal Independence Payment Information

The UK government has given an update on a benefit called Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Over four million people in England and Wales now get this benefit, which is a new record.

The government wants to change the system that helps people with disabilities. PIP is for people who need help with daily tasks because of a health condition or disability.

In April 2026, there were 4.01 million people getting PIP. This is up from 3.74 million a year ago, which is an increase of 7%.

The number of people getting PIP has almost doubled since 2019. Last year, the government had to stop plans to change disability benefits because some politicians did not agree.

Instead of changing PIP right away, the government is asking for opinions on how to make it better. Any changes will happen after this review is finished.

The review of PIP will give an update soon. Most people getting PIP are over 50, but more young people are getting it now.

In April, 16.6% of people getting PIP were 16-29 years old. This is up from 14.5% in 2019. More people aged 30-44 are also getting PIP.

Fewer people aged 45-59 are getting PIP now. But more people aged 60-74 are getting it.

The government says it is keeping its promise to have more face-to-face assessments for PIP. The number of new PIP claims that are approved has been going down.

The government has made a new rule to help people with disabilities work without losing their benefits. This rule is called the Right to Try scheme.

The government says the old system was not working well and kept people in poverty. It wants to change the system to help people work.

The government is already making changes to the system. It will do more to help people with disabilities and make the system fair.

A government spokesperson said they are fixing the old system to make it work better for everyone.

A politician from the opposition party said they would review the whole PIP system and make changes to help people with disabilities.
