Big Store Must Refund 40,000 Customers

The store will pay a total of £600,000, with each customer getting around £15 back. The Competition and Markets Authority found that Marks Electrical charged customers for extra services without their agreement.

These extra services included removing and recycling old appliances and unwrapping new products.

Businesses are not allowed to automatically add extra costs to purchases. Marks Electrical was also fined £720,000.

Marks Electrical changed its selling practices after the Competition and Markets Authority started an investigation. The company got a 40% reduction in its fine because of this.

The investigation looked at the time from April 2025 to November 2025.

Marks Electrical will contact the affected customers and automatically refund them using the same payment method they used to buy their appliance.

If this is not possible, the customer will get a cheque. The amount of money each customer gets back will depend on how much they paid for the extra services.
