A Korean Man's Sad Story: Giving Away Millions to Streamers

He spent most of his money.

In South Korea, a man in his 30s, known as Mr. A, was found dead in his car. He had a big debt of ₩150 million KRW, which is about $112,000 USD.

Mr. A spent up to ₩50 million KRW daily on donations to female streamers. He was a normal office worker. His family now says the streamers and officials cheated him after he died.

The sad event happened in May 2023. After Mr. A died, his family found out how bad his financial situation was. They reported some streamers to the police.

Mr. A liked a type of internet show where guest streamers invite others. Donations decided their rank and if they stayed on the show. Mr. A went into debt to help his favorite streamers.

Some streamers say the donations were voluntary. One streamer said, “It’s sad, but he chose to donate, and nothing can be done now.” But some people say streamers use fake accounts to get more donations.

A streamer admitted to donating to herself to stay on the show. She said most viewers don’t care about this. She said, “I donated to myself, but I think viewers don’t mind, and even if they know, they don’t care.”

The streamers say they did what they promised with the donations. They say there was no cheating.

The broadcaster says all promises were kept without cheating.
