Artemis II Astronauts Have Trouble with Toilet on Way to Moon

NASA is sending people deeper into space, but their toilet has some problems.

The four astronauts on the Artemis II mission have had some issues with their toilet since launching from Earth.

The toilet couldn't dump waste outside because of a frozen vent line, so the astronauts used a different system with plastic containers.

Despite toilet troubles, Artemis II is doing well on its 10-day mission around the Moon.

The four astronauts are in a small cabin, about the size of a camper van, with limited space.

Astronaut Christina Koch said there was a small problem with the toilet's 'priming' system.

Koch called herself the 'space plumber' and said the toilet is very important.

NASA said a wastewater vent line got clogged, causing the problem.

The astronauts adjusted the spacecraft to point the vent at the Sun to clear the clog, which didn't change their path.

They were able to free up space in the waste tank, but the problem wasn't fully fixed.

Engineers used heaters to melt ice that might be clogging the line and kept the vent pointed at the Sun.

The toilet is working, but the crew was told to use backup devices if needed.

John Honeycutt talked about the public's interest in the space toilet during a news conference.

Honeycutt said people are interested in the toilet because it's a basic human need, and it's harder to manage in space.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman mentioned the waste issue and said they need to work on it.

Artemis II is now on a path that will take the crew around the far side of the Moon and back.

The crew will not land on the Moon, but will circle it to prepare for a future human landing.

The astronauts will test the Orion capsule and practice manually flying it to prepare for future Moon landings.
