The pay for Canadian MPs went up from $208,900 to $217,700 in April.

Dawson first said he did not want the pay raise in February.

Many of his colleagues were not happy with his decision.

The House of Commons clerk said the rules do not allow MPs to refuse pay raises.

The clerk said changing the rules would require a new law.

Dawson asked for a public meeting to discuss his request.

The clerk suggested Dawson could donate the pay raise to charity.

Dawson said he has been donating the pay raise.

But he said that is not the point.

Dawson thinks he should be able to refuse the pay raise like any other worker.

The Speaker's office does not comment on this issue.

The Conservative Leader's office did not respond to a request for comment.

The Conservative caucus chair did not respond either.

Dawson thinks MPs should be able to decide if they want the pay raise or not.

He thinks the public would support freezing MP salaries.

Dawson got many letters from Canadians supporting his decision.

One person wrote to say 'good job'.

Another person said Dawson is their hero.

A group called the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is supporting Dawson.

The group said Canadians support Dawson and they will make sure their voice is heard in court.
