I had a different idea about having a dog.

Bruce and his dog Steady had a hard time at first.

My dad was a kind but strict father.

I saw that I was like my dad, so I didn't want kids or pets.

I thought I would be a bad pet owner because I am strict and anxious.

Then I turned 40, and I got a puppy.

I got a dog named Steady.

I wasn't sure what I was doing.

After two weeks, I was very sad.

I thought getting a dog was a bad idea.

Dogs are a lot of work and not just fun.

Having a dog changed my life, but not all in good ways.

I was very upset because my dog wasn't what I expected.

Bruce felt trapped by trying to be a perfect dog owner.

I thought having a dog would be easy and fun, but it wasn't.

I didn't think about how my personality would fit with a dog.

It didn't fit well.

The truth about having a dog

I was very worried about my dog's safety.

I had to watch him all the time and make sure he didn't eat anything bad.

What did you learn from having a pet?

I was worried that I was doing everything wrong with my dog.

Bruce loves his dog, but it wasn't easy.

I was tired of always watching my dog and making sure he was okay.

I knew I was doing some things wrong with my dog.

I didn't feel the love for my dog that I thought I would.

I wanted to love my dog, but I was too anxious.

I thought I wouldn't be a good parent because I couldn't love my dog.

I felt like I had to be perfect, and so did my dog.

A friend of mine had a similar experience with her dog.

She said it was like the 'baby blues' but for dogs.

Letting go of being perfect

My partner helped me with my dog.

He was good with my dog, and my dog loved him.

It took time for me to bond with my dog.

My dog is a good dog, and he is great with kids and animals.

My dog needs a lot of exercise and attention.

It took time for me and my dog to bond.

I learned to control my anxiety and be a better dog owner.

I stopped trying to make my dog perfect.

I don't expect myself to be perfect, so I shouldn't expect it from my dog.
