In a do-or-die moment 98 minutes into stoppage time, Fredrik Aursnes prepared to take a free-kick from halfway into Madrid's territory after being fouled by Jude Bellingham. The directives from Jose Mourinho were explicit, urging his players, including goalkeeper Trubin, to invade the opponent’s box from the sidelines. In a dramatic sequence, the keeper soared highest in the area as Aursnes sent the ball accurately, connecting with his head to send it past a bewildered Thibaut Courtois and into the net.
The Estadio da Luz erupted as the Ukrainian celebrated, with his teammates on and off the pitch joining him in ecstatic joy. Mourinho was spotted passionately celebrating from the dugout, embraced by his coaching staff.
Trubin's goal marked the final moment of the match, as Real Madrid players exited the field dejectedly - dropping to ninth place in the Champions League rankings due to the defeat and subsequently required to play in a qualifying match to reach the round of 16. It was a challenging evening for Los Blancos, despite the La Liga giants taking an early lead.
Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring 30 minutes into the game, before Andreas Schjelderup equalized six minutes later. Vangelis Pavlidis then put the hosts ahead just before half-time with a smoothly taken penalty, but Madrid fought back in hopes of securing a top-eight finish in the UCL.
Schjelderup netted his second of the night around 10 minutes into the second half, before Mbappe scored again to keep the deficit at one goal. However, the situation worsened for Madrid during stoppage time.
Raul Asencio received an early dismissal after picking up a second yellow card two minutes into the allotted extra time, followed by Rodrygo facing a similar fate just a minute before Trubin's exceptional header at the end. With the 4-2 victory, Benfica climbed to 24th in the Champions League standings, while Roberto De Zerbi's Marseille were eliminated from the tournament along with 11 other teams.
At the top of the table, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting CP, and Manchester City secured their positions in the round of 16 by finishing among the top eight in the league phase. The draw for the knockout stage play-off will take place on Friday, January 30, where both Benfica and Real Madrid will discover their fates.
