Jockey Billy Loughnane Faces Temporary Ban

A talented young jockey, Billy Loughnane, has been given a 21-day suspension after an incident at Southwell on Thursday.

At just 20 years old, Loughnane has already made a name for himself in the world of horse racing, with a record-breaking 223 wins last year, making him the top jockey in Britain.

Loughnane's current season is also off to a strong start, with 44 wins on the all-weather tracks, and he has set his sights on winning the main championship title for the first time in 2026.

On Thursday, Loughnane was riding a horse called Beelzebub, trained by David Loughnane, in the final 6-furlong handicap race at Southwell.

However, just before the start of the race, Beelzebub was kicked and suffered an injury, prompting the racecourse vet to withdraw the horse from the competition.

Despite this, Loughnane chose to ride Beelzebub back to the starting point, which led to him being called in for a stewards' inquiry.

The inquiry found that Loughnane had gone against the vet's instructions by riding the injured horse, and as a result, he was suspended for 21 days for improper riding.

The stewards' report included interviews with Loughnane, the BHA Veterinary Officer, and the Racecourse Veterinary Surgeon, all of whom played a role in the decision to suspend the young jockey.

Loughnane's suspension will begin on April 9 and last until April 30, causing him to miss several important racing events, including the Craven meeting at Newmarket and the Greenham fixture at Newbury.

Fortunately for Loughnane, he will be back in action just in time for the 2,000 Guineas, where he is expected to ride a strong contender called Bow Echo.

The temporary ban is a setback for Loughnane, but he is likely to bounce back and continue his successful racing career.
