CFL Changes Play Clock Rule

Games will not end in a tie.

The CFL will keep its 20-second play clock this season.

The CFL will use a 35-second clock, but switch to 20 seconds in the last 3 minutes.

The league's board approved this change after the rules committee suggested it.

The 20-second clock starts after the 3-minute warning in each half.

Games will not end in a tie. Teams will try 2-point converts until one wins. All attempts will be from the same end.

Each team can take a 15-second timeout in overtime.

The replay centre will review turnovers on downs automatically.

Other changes are coming.

A half or game can end on a quarterback kneel if the defence has no timeouts left.

The ball will be scrimmaged from the 40-yard line if a field goal hits the goalpost.

Team benches will be between the 40-yard lines on opposite sidelines.

Teams can give officials a third ineligible number before games.

An incomplete pass can happen when an ineligible receiver penalty is called.

The replay centre will not slow the game down unless a critical ruling is in question.

The replay centre will help on-field officials during natural breaks in play.

The CFL season starts June 4 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats hosting the Montreal Alouettes.
