Ecuador Beats Germany to Advance in World Cup

Ecuador's team moved on to the next round for the first time since 2002.

Gonzalo Plata scored a goal in the 77th minute, helping Ecuador win 2-1 over Germany. This win put Ecuador into the knockout stage of the World Cup.

Germany led the game early with a goal from Leroy Sane. But Ecuador tied the game when Nilson Angulo scored in the ninth minute.

Plata helped Ecuador come back after Pedro Vite kicked the ball to Kevin Rodriguez. Plata then kicked the ball into the net, scoring the winning goal.

Ecuador's coach, Sebastian Beccacece, was very happy and ran to the stands to celebrate.

Ecuador finished third in its group with four points and moved on to the next round for the second time.

Germany's winning streak ended at 11 games. They will play their next game on Monday, likely against Paraguay, Australia, or Sweden.

Ivory Coast also moved on to the knockout round for the first time.

Canada might have gotten lucky with their playoff matchup.

A big crowd of 80,663 people watched the game at MetLife Stadium, setting a new record for attendance.

Germany scored first when Sane got his 18th international goal. But there was no foul called even though Aleksandar Pavlović kicked the ball and Vite was hit.

Angulo scored for Ecuador after Felix Nmecha lost the ball. Vite passed it to Angulo, who then scored by dribbling the ball and beating the goalkeeper.

The referee originally gave Germany a penalty kick, but after looking at the video, it was decided that Sane had fouled Vite first.
