Beach Rule in Spain and Portugal Could Cost You £433

If you plan to go to the beach in Spain, Portugal, Italy, or Croatia, you should know about some strict rules to avoid big fines.

Some holiday places have rules about what you can wear, especially when it comes to swimwear like bikinis and shorts.

The problem is not wearing these on the beach, but when you walk into town. Since 2022, Sorrento in Italy has banned wearing swimwear away from beaches and pools. If you break this rule, you could get a fine of up to €500, which is about £433.

You won't get a fine if you wear swimwear at your hotel, beach club, pool, or beach. But if you wear it to walk into town and try to go into shops or restaurants, you might get in trouble.

Some places in Spain have been making rules about what you can wear to the beach. In Barcelona, you could get a fine of up to £260 for walking around town in beachwear. In Majorca, you could get a fine of up to £500 if you wear beachwear away from the main beaches and pools. You also can't walk around without a shirt. Many restaurants have signs that say you can't wear beachwear inside.

In Malaga, if you walk into the city centre in your beachwear, you could get a fine of up to €300, which is about £259.

In Sorrento, locals say they're making these rules to protect the area's decency. They don't want people showing up to lunch in just swim shorts or bikinis. The rule also applies to people who walk around town without a shirt.

Portofino, Positano, and Capri all have similar rules. If you wear beachwear in the main town, you could get a fine of up to €500, which is about £433.

Other places in Italy, like Venice, have rules against walking around the historic city centre in swimwear or without a shirt. You could get a fine of up to €250, which is about £216.

In Albufeira, they made new rules last year. If you wear swimwear outside of the beach or pool area, you could get a fine from €300 to €1,500, which is about £259-£1298. They made these rules to stop tourists from behaving badly.

In Dubrovnik, you're not allowed to enter the Old Town in swimwear or without a shirt. If you break this rule, you could get a fine of up to €700, which is about £606. Split also has rules like this, and you could get a fine of up to €150, which is about £129.

On the party island of Hvar, there are new rules that say you'll get a fine if you walk around in swimwear or without a shirt in town.
