Sri Lanka Removes £40 Tourist Fee for British Visitors

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with golden beaches and turquoise waters.

Traveling to Sri Lanka just got cheaper for Brits, as they no longer need to pay a tourist fee.

British tourists going to Sri Lanka don't have to pay an extra fee, as it was removed on May 25. The Sri Lankan government made the Electronic Travel Authorisation free for UK visitors, dropping the $50 fee to attract more tourists.

This change applies to the UK and 39 other countries. Brits going to Sri Lanka need to get a free ETA before they leave, which is valid for 30 days.

Tourists can extend their stay online through the Sri Lankan Immigration portal. The Foreign Office says: 'You don't need a visa if you're just passing through Sri Lanka by air, if your next flight is within 24 hours.' Check with your airline about transit times. You can also apply for an extension online.

Sri Lanka is also known for its wildlife and national parks.

However, the Foreign Office warns: 'If you stay longer than 30 days, you might face immigration problems, including detention, fines, or being banned from Sri Lanka.'

To enter Sri Lanka, British travelers must have a passport that's valid for at least six months. If not, they might be turned away at the border.

While travel to Sri Lanka was restricted earlier this year, there's no current warning against travel for Brits. However, the Foreign Office notes that the Middle East conflict has caused global travel disruptions.

The Foreign Office says: 'The Middle East conflict has caused travel problems, including flight delays and cancellations. Your plans might be affected, even if you're not going to the Middle East.'

Some flights from Sri Lanka to the UK might be delayed or rerouted. British tourists should check with their airlines and consider alternative flights.

The Foreign Office advises tourists to take certain steps before they travel.
