Summer Travel to Europe May Be Chaotic

Summer is coming and airports are worried.

The head of European airports says he doesn't know how they will handle the big crowds and delays caused by a new EU border system.

Stefan Schulte, the president of European airports, said passengers are waiting in line for hours and he's not sure how they will cope with even more people in the coming weeks.

The EU started a new system that requires visitors to register with biometric information when entering or leaving most European countries.

This new system has caused big delays and missed flights at many airports, but some have had a smoother start.

There were huge lines in Athens, and about 20 passengers missed their flight to London, which is a concern for when the new system is fully in place.

Schulte asked politicians to stop saying the new system is working fine when it's not, and to suspend it when necessary to avoid chaos.

He said they need to be able to stop the new system when needed and rethink the processes to avoid more chaos.

The European Commission will let airports stop the new system in some cases until September, and Schulte thinks governments should step in to suspend it to prevent long lines.

The busy summer travel time will last longer than September, and Schulte warned it could cause the system to completely fail.

There was a disagreement about the system in Greece earlier this year, with the tourism minister saying Britons wouldn't be bothered by the new checks.

But the Greek Foreign Ministry said they didn't know about any exemptions for certain nationalities.

The head of Wizz Air told passengers to arrive at least three hours early to get through the new system.

While some people have had easy trips, there have been long lines in popular places like Spain, Portugal, and France.
