Vietnam's classical music scene has seen
0:03
a resurgence marked by a wave of
0:05
performances from worldrenowned
0:07
international orchestra. Uh yet despite
0:10
this momentum, the genre remains largely
0:13
confined to former concert halls and a
0:16
niche audience. Why does it struggle to
0:19
reach the mainstream and how can we
0:22
solve that issue? First, let's hear from
0:24
young audiences on how they view the art
0:27
form today.
0:42
I think the biggest barrier is that many
0:45
people believe you need a certain level
0:46
of knowledge to understand classical
0:48
music.
0:50
I think storytelling is the key. When
0:52
people understand the story behind the
0:54
piece, what the composer wanted to
0:56
express, and how the performers connect
0:58
with the music, it becomes much easier
1:00
for young audiences to connect with
1:02
classical music as well.
1:09
>> I think classical music should be
1:10
performed in places where young people
1:13
already spend their time, such as cafes
1:15
and other community spaces. Combined
1:18
with more affordable ticket prices, it
1:20
would give more people the opportunity
1:22
to experience it.
1:38
Cultivating musical literacy is the key
1:41
to expanding classical music's audience.
1:44
For young people, the hurdle is often
1:46
the setting, not the music. To bridge
1:49
this gap, organizers are transforming
1:52
performance spaces and concert formats
1:54
to make the genre truly accessible.
1:57
Let's take a closer look at these modern
1:59
changes.
2:07
This cafe may be small, but today it is
2:10
filled with the melody of Subert Leonard
2:13
D298.
2:15
Now classical music is finding new ways
2:17
to engage with audiences
2:21
with the aim of making classical music
2:23
more accessible. This project is
2:25
reimagining how the genre is
2:27
experienced. Rather than recreating the
2:30
concert hall, the project draws
2:31
inspiration from the way composer France
2:34
Schubert once shared his music with
2:36
friends gathered together in an intimate
2:38
setting.
2:41
We noticed that Vietnam has a great cafe
2:43
culture. Vietnamese Hanoyans like to
2:45
mingle, like to have a intimate space to
2:48
share something together, share story,
2:50
share culture. Yes. So why not classical
2:52
music? The spirit of intimacy, the love
2:55
with classical music. And that's how it
2:57
started.
2:58
When you mention about the idea of
3:00
classical music, you go to bigger space,
3:02
you see the musicians on higher stage,
3:05
much further away from you, you feel a
3:08
little bit distant. Uh but in our
3:11
events, we sit very close with our
3:13
audiences. Uh they can see us clearly,
3:16
they can hear us clearly.
3:19
>> The project presents around 12
3:21
performances approaching thousands of
3:23
audience each year. Behind every concert
3:25
is the work of six core musicians with
3:28
different full-time job joined by guest
3:31
artists who are dedicated throughout the
3:33
year to bring each performance to the
3:35
stage to bridge the gap between
3:38
classical music and wider audiences.
3:40
Each program includes introductions to
3:42
the composer, the historical context and
3:44
the stories behind every piece.
3:47
I think any any people like stories and
3:50
I think just having some kind of story
3:52
help them to resonate more with the
3:55
piece of art and it help them enjoy the
3:57
music more.
4:01
Performing here feels different from
4:03
playing in a concert hall. As a young
4:05
musician, opportunities like this are
4:07
incredibly valuable. They help us gain
4:10
confidence on stage while bringing
4:12
classical music closer to more people.
4:17
Behind each performance is a regular
4:20
rehearsal by a team of dedicated
4:22
musicians. Whether in a cafe or a
4:24
concert hall, they continue introducing
4:26
classical music to young audiences and
4:29
inspiring greater interest in the genre.
4:37
And for more on the changing landscape
4:39
of classical music in Vietnam, we're now
4:41
joined by Mos Mui Hayan, educational
4:44
curator and facilitator. Well, hello Mos
4:47
Hayan. Uh, how's the perception of
4:49
classical music beginning to change in
4:51
Vietnam?
4:52
>> I think um, as an audience and also as
4:57
an organizer, I've been seeing a lot of
5:01
changes. um uh throughout the recent
5:05
years um I think there are a lot of
5:10
changes in the space. We can see that um
5:13
now uh a lot of classical music concerts
5:18
uh have been organized in intimate
5:20
spaces like a cafe space, a tea shop. So
5:24
the all of that adds up to um a more
5:28
much more open and friendly space for
5:31
the audience to come into concerts.
5:34
Yes. Uh so what do you think has been
5:37
the biggest barrier preventing more
5:39
people especially young audiences from
5:42
engaging with classical music?
5:46
So talking about the barriers um that um
5:51
somehow
5:53
um
5:55
like create difficulties for the
5:57
audience especially young audiences to
5:59
come to the classical music. The biggest
6:02
for me is the psychological barriers. Uh
6:06
which means that every time we listen or
6:09
we heard like there is a uh classical
6:12
music is uh happening soon. We feel like
6:16
oh this is something cool maybe
6:18
interesting but we still feel like not
6:21
so ready something that make me feel
6:24
make us feel hesitant to go to. So it's
6:26
not easy for audience to be engaged to
6:29
the music to the classical music because
6:32
of those reason I think.
6:34
>> And now looking ahead uh what is key to
6:37
building a broader audience for
6:39
classical music in Vietnam?
6:46
uh to
6:48
to build uh a more healthy um and
6:53
developed uh scene of classical music in
6:57
Vietnam. Uh we need more channels
7:01
uh more uh spaces in the education
7:04
system. Um and um the things I think
7:09
also important is um talking about the
7:12
community or about the audience. So what
7:15
we can do is just be more open. I think
7:18
at the end of the day there is no rules.
7:20
There is no like a fixed borders to
7:24
listen and to enjoy any kind of forms of
7:26
art and um it is an open space for
7:30
everyone and for the mass audience.
7:34
Well, Mi and once again, thank you for
7:37
joining us and for sharing your
7:39
insights.
