Trump-backed Candidate Loses Primary Election
Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, lost his primary election to Charlie Hatcher, a farmer and former state commissioner of agriculture. Ogles was defeated on Thursday evening. Hatcher is a Republican challenger.
The primary election was not highly watched at first, but it showed larger issues within the Republican Party. There were differences in endorsements between President Donald Trump and Tennessee's Governor Bill Lee. Millions of dollars were spent on the election due to environmental policy, making it notable.
A super PAC called the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition spent about $2 million against Ogles and for Hatcher. The group has raised $6.7 million this year, with a significant amount spent on Ogles' election.
A top Trump ally warned that a super PAC funded by a Democratic billionaire is interfering in the Republican primary.

Ogles believes the spending against him is an attempt to show Republicans what happens when they try to reduce government funding for renewable energy.
Like many Republicans, Ogles wants to reduce investments in renewable energy made under the Biden Administration.
Ogles said the group's spending shows how much money they are making from government subsidies and that they are upset about losing this funding.
The super PAC is funded by Chris Larsen, a billionaire and chairman of Ripple, a financial technology company. Larsen is also a Democratic donor.
Larsen has donated $5,444,975 to support Kamala Harris's presidential campaign.
Ogles thinks his opposition to government-backed renewable energy and his closeness to Trump made him a target.
Ogles said he is targeted because of his relationship with the president, his outspoken nature, and his straightforward speech on issues.
A Republican governor endorsed Hatcher, who is challenging the Trump-backed congressman in the primary.

Hatcher, a fifth-generation farmer, presents himself as someone without political baggage and special interests.
Hatcher said there is a lack of common sense and work ethic in Washington. He believes in problem-solving and supporting the Trump Administration.
Tennessee's Republican governor supported Hatcher, citing their personal relationship.
The governor said Hatcher has conservative values and loves the country. He also said Hatcher has supported President Trump from the start.
Trump reaffirmed his support for Ogles before the primary election.
Trump praised Ogles, saying he will be one of the best congressmen. Ogles has always been there for Trump when needed.
A new congressional map is likely to flip the last Democratic seat in Tennessee.
