Why Kyrgios' Cocaine Ban Was Cut to One Month
The positive result was for benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, found in a sample taken after the ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca, Spain, on June 22. A WADA‑accredited laboratory confirmed the finding on July 17, and Kyrgios was provisionally suspended from August 4.
Under World Anti‑Doping Agency (WADA) rules, the baseline sanction for this type of breach is three months. The rules also allow the suspension to be reduced to one month if the athlete enters a treatment program approved by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
The ITIA consulted an independent scientific expert at a WADA‑accredited lab, who said the cocaine level matched use that occurred out of competition. After Kyrgios agreed to join the approved treatment program, the ITIA reduced his ban to one month.
Because of the reduced sanction, Kyrgios can return to competition on September 4.
