Moon Phase Today: August 3
On August 3, the Moon is in the Waning Gibbous phase. 79% of it is visible.
You can see the Copernicus Crater and Tycho Crater with your eyes. Binoculars help with Alphonsus Crater and Mare Humorum. A telescope shows Apollo 11, 14, and 15 landing spots.
The next Full Moon is on August 28.
The Moon changes phases every 29.5 days. As it moves, we see different amounts of its sunlit side. This makes the Moon look different to us.
There are eight Moon phases.
New Moon: The Moon is between Earth and the sun, so we don't see it.
Waxing Crescent: A small part of the Moon is lit on the right side.
First Quarter: Half of the Moon is lit on the right. It looks like half a Moon.
Waxing Gibbous: More than half of the Moon is lit, but not all of it.
Full Moon: The whole Moon is lit and visible.
Waning Gibbous: The Moon starts losing light on the right side.
Third Quarter: The left side of the Moon is lit, like another half-Moon.
Waning Crescent: A small part of the Moon is lit on the left before it goes dark.
