Today's Moon Phase: What the Moon Looks Like on August 6

The Moon is in a new phase tonight, called the Third Quarter. This means it is halfway between the Full Moon and New Moon.

On Thursday, August 6, NASA says the Moon is in the Third Quarter phase, with 48% of it visible.

We can see some parts of the Moon without any tools. With binoculars, we can see more. If we have a telescope, we can see even more, like the Schiller Crater and the Fra Mauro Highlands.

The next Full Moon will be on August 28.

The Moon changes as it goes around the Earth. It takes about 29.5 days to complete one cycle. The Sun, Earth, and Moon move, so we see different parts of the Moon. This is why we see different phases, like a small crescent or a full Moon.

There are eight phases of the Moon.

The New Moon is when the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, so we can't see it.

The Waxing Crescent is when we see a small part of the Moon lit up on the right side.

The First Quarter is when half of the Moon is lit up on the right side. It looks like a half-Moon.

The Waxing Gibbous is when more than half of the Moon is lit up, but not all of it.

The Full Moon is when the whole Moon is lit up and we can see it all.

The Waning Gibbous is when the Moon starts to lose light on the right side.

The Third Quarter is when we see half of the Moon lit up again, but on the left side.

The Waning Crescent is when we see a small part of the Moon lit up on the left side before it goes dark.
