A 40‑Year‑Old Hawker Stall Closes, Raising Concerns for Singapore’s Food Heritage

On August 24, Deitrich Mohan, the third‑generation owner of Maxwell Fuzhou Oyster Cake, posted an Instagram video announcing that the stall China Street Hum Jin Pang would close.

The stall first opened in 1975. It became famous because customers could fry their own savory dough fritters, which were sold for S$1 for five pieces.

The family started as street vendors and were among the first hawkers to move into Maxwell Market in 1986. The market was later renovated and reopened as Maxwell Food Centre in 1987.

Before the shutdown, the stall was run by second‑generation owner Li Shuhui. After the video, many customers wrote comments showing their disappointment and sharing memories of the snack.

Singapore has seen 1,267 food‑business closures between January and April this year, which is almost half of all closures recorded last year, according to The Straits Times.

The loss of a 40‑year‑old stall highlights a wider wave of hawker closures and raises questions about how Singapore will keep its food culture alive for future generations.
