Toyota is the most popular car brand, but a Chinese electric vehicle maker, BYD, is becoming popular too.
A university researcher said, 'The numbers show we are entering a new phase.'
Now, the market for electric vehicles is becoming more mature.
The car industry said electric vehicles helped with record sales in July, but charging stations need to improve.
The industry leader said, 'We need good charging stations to keep people confident in electric vehicles.'
Changing attitudes to electric vehicles
Some politicians used to say electric vehicles would ruin weekends by making it hard to tow boats and caravans.
But now, hybrid and electric vehicles can do these things, and with high fuel prices, people are changing their minds.
A researcher said, 'People started thinking, what if I go away for the weekend and can't get petrol?'
