Conservative MP Larry Brock to Leave, 8th Federal Byelection Needed
There will be an 8th federal byelection because Larry Brock is leaving. This byelection must happen between August 31 and mid-April.
Brock was elected in 2021 to represent Brantford–Brant South. He is leaving to work at the Crown attorney's office in Brantford, Ontario.
Brock is the third Conservative MP to quit this summer. Another MP, Cathay Wagantall, is also stepping down, and Richard Martel was appointed to the Senate.
There will be byelections in Chicoutimi–Le Fjord, North Vancouver–Capilano, and Beaches–East York at the end of the month.
The North Vancouver–Capilano and Beaches–East York byelections are to replace former ministers Jonathan Wilkinson and Nate Erskine-Smith. Wilkinson is now Canada's ambassador to the European Union, and Erskine-Smith ran for office in Ontario.
Bloc Québécois MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay quit to run in the Quebec election on October 5. He used to represent Saint-Hyacinthe–Bagot–Acton.
Saint-Hyacinthe–Bagot–Acton is the only empty federal seat without a byelection.
The prime minister must call a byelection between 11 and 180 days after a seat is empty. The campaign lasts 36 to 50 days, so the vote must happen 47 days to seven months after the seat is empty.
The prime minister cannot do anything until the MP officially leaves their seat.
Alexandre Boulerice is running for Québec solidaire in the provincial election, but he has not given up his Montreal seat yet.
Former minister Steven Guilbeault said he would quit as a Montreal MP on May 27. His last day is August 28.
Larry Brock will step down on September 18.
The House of Commons will return from its summer break on September 21.
