Maine Senate Candidate Admits to Past Fight
Maine Democratic Senate nominee Troy Jackson talked to Fox News Digital about a fight he had nearly 40 years ago. Senate Republicans reacted to a new police report about the violent confrontation.
Troy Jackson said, 'Nearly 40 years ago, I got into a fight with another man. I took responsibility for it then, and I take responsibility for it now.'
Jackson added, 'But let me be clear: I have never been violent with my partner Lana, or any other woman. This happened nearly four decades ago, and I assure Mainers this incident does not reflect the man I am today.'
Troy Jackson became the top choice for the Democratic Senate nomination.
Troy Jackson spoke in Bangor, Maine, after becoming the Democratic Party's choice for the U.S. Senate. He will run against Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) asked Democrats to condemn Jackson over the report. Jackson is running to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a race that could help determine control of the Senate.
The NRSC wrote, 'Disgusting and inexcusable. Troy Jackson is violent and has no place in the Senate.'
The NRSC tagged several Senate Democrats in posts about the 1988 incident, including Sheldon Whitehouse and Chuck Schumer.
The NRSC also tagged Sen. Bernie Sanders and former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.
The Bangor Daily News got a 1988 police report that said Jackson broke down a door and punched a man at a Fort Kent home.
According to the police report, Jackson went to the home and kicked the door in after being told to leave.
There was a report about Troy Jackson's past that caused a reaction online.
Maine Democrats chose Troy Jackson as their new U.S. Senate nominee after Graham Platner dropped out.
Jackson allegedly grabbed the man by the throat and swung at him, striking his glasses and cutting his face.
The police report said Jackson's partner Lana Pelletier told an officer that Jackson had pushed her after the confrontation.
Pelletier disputed the account in a statement to Fox News Digital.
Pelletier said, 'I do not remember making those statements, and they are not accurate. Troy and I have built a life and family together.'
The NRSC asked several lawmakers to condemn Jackson over the 1988 incident.
The BDN reported that it found no record of Pelletier seeking a protection order.
Jackson entered into an agreement to pay the man $50 to resolve the case.
The BDN reported that Jackson does not have a criminal record and that the 1988 case was the only one involving him.
Fox News Digital tried to get the underlying records and contacted the Fort Kent Police Department.
The Fort Kent Police Department said it had sought advice from its attorneys about releasing the documents.
The controversy came after Jackson secured the Democratic nomination to challenge Collins.
