According to a news release from the national bank, the many botanical motifs on the note are meant to echo King Charles’s long‑standing advocacy for sustainable action and the environment.
The reverse side displays the floral emblems of all 13 Canadian provinces and territories, and also includes Indigenous flowers such as wild strawberries, western red cedar, braided sweetgrass and arctic cotton.
The iconic maple leaf appears both as a decorative element and as a security feature, while an illustration of the Vimy Memorial and etched poppies honour Canadian soldiers who fought in the First World War.
Governor General Louise Arbour said the project was a joint effort, involving the Bank of Canada, the Indigenous Advisory Circle, Veterans Affairs Canada and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
Together, these design choices turn the $20 note into a compact showcase of Canada’s cultural heritage, environmental values and modern security technology.
