What a Bald Eagle Rescue Shows About Wildlife Emergencies and Teamwork
City bylaw officers, led by Ian Harrower, supervisor of bylaw compliance, used dirt bikes, jackets and about six people to corner the bird. The whole effort lasted about 40 minutes.
After the bird was caught, the team moved it to Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge in Nanticoke. The refuge is run by Chantal Theijin, an authorized wildlife custodian, and it looks after one or two dozen eagles each year.
At the refuge, X‑rays and blood tests showed the eagle had no broken wing. The staff said the bird should recover in two to four weeks.
The rescue was a joint effort. It involved the City of Brantford bylaw compliance team, the landfill supervisor, Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge and volunteers from Hillside Kennels.
This case shows how wildlife emergencies need clear plans and cooperation between officials and community helpers.
