Thailand’s Air Pollution Costs: Health, Jobs, Tourism and Growth at Risk

According to The Nation, Thailand ranks 20th out of 180 countries for the health‑care cost burden caused by fine‑particle (PM2.5) pollution, based on data presented at a recent seminar.

The smog cuts worker productivity both inside and outside offices, raises sick‑leave rates, dampens consumer spending, lowers tourism earnings and pushes down property prices in the most polluted districts.

Because the haze returns each dry season, the country struggles to lure high‑skill professionals and affluent tourists. Children growing up in polluted areas also face poorer physical health and weaker intellectual development, threatening the future talent pool.

Environmental activists and economists warned that the repeated postponement of the Clean Air Bill in the Thai Parliament now stands as a major barrier to sustainable economic growth.
