A Lawyer Grows Organic Durians in Malaysia

Vin Cheah, 30, left his law job because it was not what he wanted. He told 8 Days, 'I quit law because it wasn't for me.' Law is a system made by people to keep order. But Cheah wanted to create something real that he could share with many people. A legal win is not something he can share with everyone, unlike durians.

Cheah quit his law job in 2021 and started a farm called Bentong Hill Durian. It is a 10-acre farm in Pahang where he grows organic durians.

The farm does not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. It uses organic methods to grow the durians.

Cheah's first harvest had only 118 durians. About half of them sold for RM100 per kilogram, which is double the price of other durians in Malaysia.

Cheah chose organic farming because he wanted to eat his own durians.

Cheah thinks agricultural chemicals are like medicine for trees. Many farmers use these chemicals to get more fruit and control pests.

Some farmers do not eat their own fruit because they know what chemicals were used on the trees.

Cheah helps other farm owners and manages workers. He takes care of about 100 acres of land with 2,800 durian trees.

More people want Cheah's help to make their farms organic. He even got calls from Indonesia and Australia, but they did not want to pay for his travel costs.

Cheah wants to sell his durians in Singapore next year, but he has not made a deal yet.
