I tried the Jackery FridgeGuard portable power station

A power outage can be nice for a short time. It's a chance to cancel plans and read a book. But when your phone's battery is low and you don't have WiFi, it's not fun. A bigger problem is when your refrigerator stops working.

I found the Jackery FridgeGuard useful around the house. It's great for backing up power for my adjustable bed or bed cooling system.

The Jackery FridgeGuard is also great for keeping my WiFi router working during a power outage. It's good for backing up my home computer. If I sleep with a CPAP, it gives me reassurance that I'll have support all night. The Jackery FridgeGuard is either silent or has a barely detectable fan hum.

One downside of the FridgeGuard is the port selection. It only has one AC port. This is enough if you're using it for refrigerator backup power, but you'll have to choose what to plug in if you want to use it for other things.

The FridgeGuard is not the best deal when it comes to portable power stations. It costs $799, which is the same as the Jackery Explorer 1000 V2. The Explorer 1000 V2 has more power and more ports.

If your main concern during a power outage is food spoiling, the Jackery FridgeGuard could be a great solution. Its unique design can easily fit on top of your fridge, and the plug-and-play nature means you'll have immediate power backup when grid power fails.

If you're looking for a portable power station to take camping or use on the jobsite, you might want to consider a different model.

Bluetti and Anker Solix introduced fridge-specific models around the same time as the Jackery FridgeGuard. The world of portable power stations is getting crowded with models that have small differences.

The Jackery FridgeGuard is the thinnest model, so if that's your main priority, you might want to choose it. Otherwise, here's a brief look at the other two models I'd consider for fridge backup.

The Anker Solix S2000 has double the power of the Jackery FridgeGuard. It can keep a standard refrigerator working for up to 35 hours. If you experience longer outages, this might be a better fit.

The Solix S2000 also has more ports. You get three AC ports on the front and two on the back. You can use a rear AC port for the refrigerator and keep the front ports open for other devices.

The Bluetti FridgePower has a similar design to the Jackery FridgeGuard. The main difference is the battery capacity. The Bluetti has almost double the capacity of the Jackery, which means it can keep the refrigerator working for twice as long.

The Bluetti FridgePower is a bit larger and heavier than the Jackery FridgeGuard. It's also more expensive.

At the time of launch, the Jackery FridgeGuard is only available at Costco and Jackery. Costco members can get it for $549.99, while it costs $799 at Jackery.

Jackery also sells a mounting bracket for $49 if you want to attach the FridgeGuard to a wall instead of putting it on top of the fridge or on the floor.
