Lesson from a mother‑son shoplifting case at Changi Airport

Police said the duo were arrested before they could leave Singapore and will be charged in court, Channel News Asia reported.

Police were alerted to a shop theft at a retail outlet in Terminal 2’s transit area at 6:46 p.m. on Aug. 28. A retail assistant reported three pairs of sunglasses missing from a display shelf.

The Straits Times reported that CCTV footage showed the teenager taking the sunglasses and leaving the store without paying.

The police said the teenager stole items worth close to S$5,000 from six retail stores in the transit area.

His 39‑year‑old mother is accused of stealing a box of perfume worth S$149 and of receiving one pair of the stolen sunglasses from her son.

Officers from the Airport Police Division used the CCTV images to locate the mother and son and arrested them before they could depart Singapore.

The three pairs of sunglasses were recovered, along with other items suspected to have been stolen.

The teenager will face six counts of theft in dwelling, while his mother will face one count of theft in dwelling and one count of receiving stolen property.
