Now, around the world, cities are
0:02
growing at faster than ever before. By
0:04
2050, nearly 70% of the world's
0:07
population will live in urban areas. As
0:11
island lines rise and populations
0:13
expand, the challenge is no longer
0:15
simply about building bigger cities. It
0:18
is about creating places that are
0:20
smarter, more resilient, and better
0:23
prepared for the future.
0:24
>> Right, but perhaps the biggest question
0:26
lies elsewhere when it might be how do
0:28
we build cities where people and nature
0:31
can thrive together? Now, for centuries,
0:34
the world has celebrated wonders shaped
0:36
by nature [music]
0:37
and history. And today, a new generation
0:39
of wonders is beginning to emerge, not
0:41
inherited from the past, but designed
0:43
for the future. And as a new global
0:45
initiative [music] looks for cities that
0:47
could define the 21st century, Vietnam
0:50
is seeking to contribute its [music] own
0:52
vision of what a future city could be.
0:56
>> Now, 15 years ago, Ha Long Bay became
0:58
one of the new Seven Wonders of Nature,
1:01
chosen by millions of people around the
1:03
world. The recognition was about more
1:06
than a spectacular landscapes. It
1:08
reflected a shared belief that some
1:10
places are worth protecting for
1:12
generations to come.
1:15
>> Amazon rainforest,
1:18
Iguazu Falls,
1:20
Jeju Island,
1:22
Komodo National Park,
1:25
Table Mountain,
1:26
Puerto Princesa Underground River,
1:30
and Vietnam's Ha Long Bay.
1:32
These final seven brought together some
1:34
of the world's most celebrated national
1:36
landmarks, representing diverse [music]
1:38
landscapes and ecosystems across
1:40
different continents. The recognition
1:42
gave Ha Long Bay unprecedented
1:44
international exposure, boosting tourism
1:47
and strengthening Vietnam's global
1:48
profile.
1:51
>> We surpassed over 440 heritages from 200
1:54
countries and territories worldwide to
1:57
be named one of the new seven wonders of
1:59
nature. Over the past decade, alongside
2:02
this title, we have also earned
2:04
accolades such as a world heritage site
2:07
and one of the world's most beautiful
2:09
bays. These titles have played a crucial
2:11
role in positioning Ha Long Bay as a top
2:14
global destination.
2:19
>> Beyond celebrating iconic destinations,
2:21
New Seven Wonders encourages sustainable
2:24
management to preserve them for future
2:26
generations.
2:28
Its newest initiative, Seven Wonders of
2:31
Future Cities, shifts the focus from
2:33
natural and historical wonders to urban
2:35
models that promote sustainability,
2:38
innovation, and quality of life.
2:41
>> When we talk about urban development,
2:43
people will think about reducing the
2:45
green spaces, replacing with concrete or
2:48
high buildings.
2:49
But we believe that the life of the
2:51
people can actually live in harmony.
2:53
Whenever we started projects, we will
2:55
study very carefully about the
2:58
hydrology, the geology, as well as the
3:00
native vegetations of the land.
3:03
Sometimes we do reshape the environment,
3:05
but only for improvement or for a better
3:08
purpose.
3:11
>> Among the initiatives' official
3:12
candidates is Vinh Hung's Green Paradise
3:15
in Can Tho.
3:16
The project aligns with the city's
3:18
long-term strategy to transform Can Tho
3:20
into a coastal eco-urban area and a hub
3:23
for the marine economy. According to the
3:25
master plan, by 2040, the area is
3:28
expected to accommodate the population
3:30
of around 600,000.
3:33
While promoting economic growth in
3:34
tandem with preservation of mangrove
3:37
ecosystems and coastal environments.
3:42
>> This is a great opportunity for us to
3:44
promote Can Tho's future development to
3:47
international friends. What matters most
3:49
here is not the title itself, but how we
3:52
can engage in global forums to share
3:54
experiences and gain fresh perspectives
3:57
on modern urban development.
4:01
>> Global voting for Seven Wonders of
4:03
Future Cities is expected to begin on
4:05
October the 31st, 2026, with the final
4:08
seven cities to be announced a year
4:10
later.
4:11
For Vietnam, it is an opportunity to
4:13
connect a globally recognized natural
4:15
heritage with new ideas for sustainable
4:18
urban development, reflecting New Seven
4:20
Wonders' enduring mission to celebrate
4:22
places that inspire generations.
4:27
>> 15 years after Ha Long Bay was
4:29
recognized as one of the New Seven
4:31
Wonders of Nature, the organization
4:33
behind that global campaign is turning
4:35
its attention to a new challenge,
4:38
identifying the future cities that could
4:40
shape the way we live in the decades
4:42
ahead.
4:43
>> And to learn more about that vision,
4:44
we're delighted to welcome Mr. Jean-Paul
4:47
de la Fuente, a director of the New
4:49
Seven Wonders. So, Jean-Paul, it's a
4:52
pleasure to have you with us in the
4:53
studio today.
4:54
>> Well, and it's very nice to be here,
4:55
particularly to be part of Vietnam
4:57
today.
4:57
>> Just to start, we know that New Seven
5:00
Wonders have been celebrating natural
5:02
and cultural wonders for more than
5:04
nearly two decades now. So, why did New
5:06
Seven Wonders decide to launch the
5:08
Future Cities initiative now?
5:11
>> Well, I think what's interesting about
5:12
our previous campaigns is that we were
5:14
honoring and recognizing the
5:15
achievements of mankind, I guess, with
5:18
the cultural wonders, and also
5:20
achievements of nature itself. So, now
5:22
we wanted to look at what could be the
5:24
future aspirations of humanity. And I
5:26
think where we live and how we live, I
5:28
think are are fundamental parts of that,
5:30
and really that was the focus for this
5:32
idea of the Seven Wonders of Future
5:33
Cities.
5:34
>> Yeah, that's wonderful.
5:36
>> Yeah, and also speaking of the future
5:38
cities, what qualities do you think
5:39
matters the most?
5:41
>> We look at three criteria, Dylan. One is
5:44
the ability uh the city to be
5:46
human-centric, which is not just words.
5:49
It means that it takes into
5:50
consideration what's important for human
5:52
beings living there.
5:53
The other, of course, is uh the concept
5:55
of sustainability and environment, but
5:57
not just as words, also about growing
6:00
cities, how they grow. They grow with
6:02
nature. And of course, because we are in
6:05
the times we are, they have to be smart
6:07
cities. So, they have to have elements
6:08
of smart technology uh that can can
6:11
impact all of those other qualities. And
6:13
those are the criteria that we consider
6:15
for a city to qualify to be a
6:16
participant in the Seven Wonders of
6:18
Future Cities.
6:18
>> Right. When when we think about
6:20
initiative historically, Vietnam has
6:21
always been a country that is very
6:23
proactive with their initiatives
6:25
regarding uh protection of the
6:26
environment, cultural heritage. And so,
6:29
uh Vietnam now being one of the first uh
6:32
countries to participate in the Future
6:33
Cities initiatives, what does it mean
6:35
for the country to be part of of of all
6:38
of this?
6:39
>> Well, I I I think your viewers will know
6:41
this because they are, you know, fans
6:43
and supporters and interested in in in
6:45
Vietnam. But the world needs to know
6:47
that Vietnam is going through a step
6:48
change, a positive step change,
6:50
transformative step change in terms of
6:52
how it perceives itself as a nation at
6:54
home and in the world. And I think both
6:57
the public sector, of course, the
6:59
government, the leadership, and the
7:00
private sector working together are
7:02
showing how this works. And I think one
7:03
of the best examples of this are the
7:05
policies that have been put in place for
7:07
uh reducing the carbon impact of
7:09
mobility in the major cities. We know
7:11
that here in Hanoi, it's a it's a it's a
7:12
classic example of that and really
7:14
setting a a model for other cities,
7:16
certainly across ASEAN, Asia, and
7:18
hopefully the rest of the world to
7:19
follow. So, we see that as all part of
7:21
the same story. That's why we see we're
7:23
not surprised to see that Seven Wonders
7:25
of Future Cities was something that
7:26
Vietnam wanted to participate on from
7:28
the beginning.
7:29
>> Well, thank you so much for all the
7:30
insights, uh John Paul, and thank you so
7:32
much for joining us here today talking
7:34
about the initiatives. And I hope uh you
7:36
know, to our audiences, this has been an
7:37
enlightening conversation. So, now, Ha
7:39
Long Bay uh really has showed that uh
7:41
the world what nature had created in
7:43
Vietnam in the future cities initiative
7:45
asks a different question. What can
7:47
Vietnam help for the future from
7:50
protecting a natural wonder to shaping
7:52
sustainable urban models. The journey
7:54
marks a symbolic shift from the wonders
7:56
we inherit to the ones we choose to
7:58
build.
