0:00For a movie that's all about Spider-Man,
0:02people sure do have a lot to say about
0:04the Punisher. Here's why Frank's vibe in
0:06Brand New Day has everyone arguing. The
0:09biggest reason is that Frank has been
0:11[music] dialed down quite a bit for his
0:12latest outing, at least as far as his
0:15murderous tendencies [music]
0:16are concerned. Remember that John
0:18Byrne's version of the anti-hero has
0:20slaughtered [music] a lot of people over
0:22the past decade. According to one
0:24intrepid Redditor [music]
0:25who took the time to count, his kill
0:27tally nearly reached 100 in the second
0:29season of the OG [music] Daredevil show
0:31alone. And that's not to mention his
0:33overall mood and outlook on life.
0:35[music] What you might call humorless
0:37for lack of a better term. So yeah, it's
0:40definitely weird to see him goof around
0:42with Peter and essentially act as a
0:44comic relief this time around.
0:48>> Go home.
0:49>> Yes, he does try to snipe Jean Grey, but
0:52he doesn't [music] even succeed thanks
0:54to Peter, who ends up taking the bullet
0:56himself. In fact, Frank [music] feels so
0:59bad about it that he stands guard over
1:01Peter while he recovers in the hospital.
1:03Definitely not his usual follow-up
1:05response [music] after pulling the
1:06trigger.
1:07While plenty of die-hard Punisher fans
1:09claim this light-hearted [music] turn
1:10makes no sense when you take his
1:12previous appearances into account,
1:14scores of other fans have no problem
1:16with it. As one fan wrote on the Brand
1:18New Day subreddit, "Thought they handled
1:20Punisher perfectly in this. He's still
1:22rough around the edges and wants to
1:24solve problems the only way he knows
1:26how." They went on to say that his
1:27relationship [music] with Peter reminds
1:29them of his relationship with Amy Bendix
1:31in the comics, highlighting how he often
1:33softens up just a tiny bit when around
1:36younger [music] people. Another fan
1:37touched on the same point, writing, "The
1:39chemistry between Punisher and Spidey
1:41was really cool to watch. He's [music]
1:43kind of like Spider-Man's crazy uncle
1:45that looks out for him, whereas Tony
1:47Stark was more of the fatherly figure
1:49for him. Two polar opposite [music]
1:51mentors that shaped Spider-Man into
1:53well-rounded character." His overall
1:56vibe is only one part [music] of the
1:57ongoing discourse. Others have also been
2:00drawing attention to what you might call
2:01that continuity problem. As one Redditor
2:04put it, "My only issue [music] is that
2:06the rest of the civilians and police in
2:07the movie didn't treat him as someone
2:10who should [music] be arrested and were
2:11too accepting." This is definitely a
2:14fair point. As you mentioned [music]
2:15before, Bernthal's version of Frank has
2:17killed untold legions of people since he
2:20first appeared in 2016. [music]
2:22And he's never faced any real
2:23consequences for it, legal ones anyway.
2:26>> [music]
2:26>> Yes, they do put him on trial in
2:28Daredevil season 2, but this doesn't
2:31result in him spending much time behind
2:32bars, even after he says things like
2:35this on the stand. [music]
2:36>> Any scumbag, any any lowlife, any maggot
2:40piece of that I put down, I did IT
2:42BECAUSE I LIKE YOU.
2:43>> ORDER.
2:44Another thing to consider though is that
2:46[music] cops have never really been much
2:47of a problem for Frank. He's an
2:49ex-Marine who most certainly knows how
2:51to dodge the fuzz if he feels like it.
2:53There's also [music] the fact that a lot
2:55of cops actually support what he does.
2:57Remember that a bunch of them joined
2:59Fisk's anti-vigilante [music] task force
3:01and sports his logo in Born Again. He
3:03hates this, of course, but it definitely
3:05helps [music] explain why he's able to
3:07easily stay out of the law's crosshairs.
3:09These issues aside, [music] the bottom
3:11line is that the majority of people have
3:13been enjoying the relationship between
3:15the two [music] characters. As one
3:16Redditor wrote, "Frank and Peter's
3:18chemistry was so perfect and
3:20complemented [music] the story in a
3:21great way. I love Daredevil, but there's
3:24no way they [music] would have had the
3:25same dynamic." This all makes sense
3:27considering how Bernthal and Holland
3:29have been friends in real life for a
3:31while now. [music]
3:32Not only have they known each other
3:33since they both auditioned for their
3:35respective Marvel roles a decade ago,
3:37they actually shot each other's audition
3:39tapes. And according to Bernthal, he's
3:41the one who made the suggestion that
3:42made Holland stand out among all the
3:44others who are vying for the highly
3:46coveted role of Spider-Man. As he told
3:48Jimmy Kimmel after explaining that the
3:50young actor is an incredible athlete,
3:53>> I give him the note, "Tom, you know,
3:54maybe you should sort of run up that
3:56wall, and do like a double backflip, and
3:57then start the scene."
3:59>> Whether or not that was truly the
4:00deciding [music] factor, we'll never
4:02know. But, it sure is nice to see them
4:04absolutely killing it together on the
4:06big screen, and keeping the magic of
4:08movies alive.
