Why Vietnam Is Poised to Overtake Thailand as the Top Durian Exporter
The country is set to harvest about 2.08 million tonnes of durians this year, a figure that is slightly higher than Thailand’s projected 2.07 million tonnes, according to the latest estimates.
China’s customs authority, the General Administration of Customs (GACC), has widened Vietnam’s export pathway. On August 20 it approved 401 new durian growing‑area codes and 166 packing‑facility codes, raising the total approved growing‑area codes to 1,917, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. Earlier, on August 5, GACC also sanctioned 50 testing facilities capable of analysing 10,000‑13,000 samples daily for cadmium and Auramine O, a capacity described by Pham Van Duy, deputy head of the Department of Processing, Quality and Market Development.
In addition, India opened its market to Vietnamese fresh durians in mid‑July, adding more than 1.4 billion potential consumers to Vietnam’s export base.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, secretary‑general of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, warned that if the current export conditions remain favourable, Vietnam could overtake Thailand as the world’s largest durian exporter.
