How Amazon’s Prime Air Drone Expansion May Change Your Shopping Speed
Today Prime Air works from 11 locations in 10 metro areas, and Amazon says the service has already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages this year.
Amazon says its drones can carry packages up to 5 pounds—roughly the size of a large shoebox—and can deliver as fast as 30 minutes, although most orders arrive around 60 minutes after checkout.
For Prime members, Amazon states there is no delivery fee on eligible orders of $50 or more and a $2.99 fee on smaller eligible orders; non‑Prime shoppers pay $4.99.
Amazon notes that drone availability depends on the buyer’s ZIP code, the exact address and a safe drop spot; when an address qualifies, the drone option appears at checkout and no separate app is required.
Amazon holds FAA Part 135 certification for Prime Air and uses a Detect‑and‑Avoid system that continuously scans the airspace to avoid obstacles, according to the company.
If your home meets these criteria, you could receive small items such as phones, earbuds or household products within an hour, potentially reducing trips to the store and changing how quickly you expect online orders to arrive.
