Why Filmmakers Keep Choosing the Australian Outback as Their Setting

Netflix’s original action thriller Apex has become one of the biggest streaming hits of the year, racking up 2.54 billion minutes viewed after its late‑April release and reaching number one on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English movies list.

When asked why the film was set and shot in Australia, director Baltasar Kormákur said the script was originally set in the United States, but the production needed a warm climate at a specific time of year, so they chose Australia.

Australia’s outback has long been a favourite backdrop for both Hollywood blockbusters and home‑grown hits, with the bush and sometimes the wildlife acting as characters in their own right.

It has become a go‑to setting for horror movies, but other genres have also benefited from the world’s anxious relationship with rural Australia.

The outback’s cross‑genre appeal is illustrated by films such as Rabbit‑Proof Fence (2002), Road Games (1981), Quigley Down Under (1990), Burke & Wills (1985), Razorback (1984), Walkabout (1971), Evil Angels (1988), Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), Wolf Creek (2004) and Wake in Fright (1971).
