Why More Kids Are Becoming Entrepreneurs Today

Across Canada, more children are opening stalls, online shops and even tech‑focused businesses, a trend driven by social media, cheap AI tools and worries about the cost of living.

Six‑year‑old Jayden Karlee Castillo began selling toys outside her home. By the time she was nine, she was also offering 3D‑printed toys, bracelets, earrings, hand sanitiser and squishies at the July Kids Markets event in Millarville, Alberta.

Lemonade Day Calgary recorded a historic 792 young participants this year, a sharp rise from the 164 who joined when the program first arrived in the city in 2023.

Assistant professor Jodi Letkiewicz describes the current wave as an “explosion” of kid‑preneurs. She points to social media exposure, easy‑to‑use AI tools and families’ concerns about the cost of living as the main reasons.

At nine, Atley Ma launched SodaKid, a soda‑stream refill service that grew into a small company. The earnings have paid his university tuition and sparked his interest in computer engineering.

Economist Ross Levine explains that running a micro‑business teaches children financial literacy, problem‑solving, teamwork and even how to read a balance sheet.

Programs such as BizKids Market in British Columbia, Kid2Kid in Toronto and the Children’s Business Fair in Manitoba give kids aged five to 17 a platform to test ideas, connect with customers and learn basic commerce.

These experiences give youngsters practical skills that schools rarely cover, preparing them for future careers and encouraging a generation that sees entrepreneurship as a realistic path.
