Why the Survivor Greece Accident Happened: Production Rules Led to a Dangerous Spearfishing Scene

On September 3, 2023, former Survivor Greece contestant Stavros Floros filed a lawsuit seeking over $100 million after a May accident in the Dominican Republic left him with a partially amputated left leg and a severely injured right leg.

The injury occurred while Floros was spearfishing for food; a tour boat carrying about 20 tourists entered the area and its propeller struck his left leg, causing the loss of part of the limb and serious damage to his other leg. A tourniquet was applied on site, and he spent 61 days in a Miami hospital undergoing multiple surgeries.

Floros alleges that the show’s producers required contestants to spearfish in open‑ocean waters that were a core and mandatory part of the game, even though the area had heavy commercial and tourist boat traffic. He says the production team did not establish any marked, roped‑off or buoyed safety zone to protect participants from passing vessels.

The complaint names Acun Medya, Acun Medya Global, Acun LLC, media mogul Acun Ilicali and Skai TV as defendants, accusing them of negligence. Floros is requesting compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $100 million to cover past and future medical expenses and the lasting impact of his injuries.
