Allies Lose Free Trade with Iran as Trump Acts

President Trump finally offers the Iran policy Europe has avoided for years: you cannot enjoy U.S. trade benefits while helping fund Tehran’s regime.

It really is that simple.

Trump’s “Economic D‑Day” is more than a list of sanctioned officials. It targets foreign banks, refiners, shippers and middlemen that keep Iran’s economy alive.

They must pick Iran or America. They can no longer have both.

Trump moves ahead with his Economic D‑Day on Iran, hoping to push the war toward an end.

When I was U.S. ambassador to the EU, I saw European leaders twist laws and morals to avoid harsh Iran sanctions. Deals always beat principles.

One country guarded an energy contract. Another chased Iranian business. A third wanted a diplomatic channel. Brussels kept waiting for a new deal that might soften Tehran if we stayed patient, constructive and commercially involved.

Europe said trade gave leverage. Iran got the trade and Europe rarely used that leverage.

Tehran used money to fund proxies, grow missiles, crush its people and push its nuclear program. When crises rose, Europeans turned to Washington for solutions.

The bargain has lasted too long: allies profit, Iran creates trouble, and America gets dirty.

Trump is turning that arrangement on its head.

The UAE’s pause on trade and finance with Iran is a big shift. Dubai has been a gateway for re‑exports, currency swaps, trade finance, shell companies and goods that sanctions tried to block.

Closing that door will hurt. But the UAE cannot be a lone hero. It must become the model.

Trump should look each allied leader in the eye and ask: Will you close your country’s Iranian commercial and financial channels, or keep funding the threat America must contain?

We are not asking allies to fight a kinetic war, send troops, drop bombs or put citizens in danger. We ask them to choke off the economic lifelines of the evil axis.

Europe said trade gave leverage. Iran got the trade and Europe rarely used that leverage.

That is not too much to ask. It is the minimum.

Countries that enjoy U.S. security, trade perks and access to the world’s biggest economy have duties. Access is a privilege, not a birthright, and privileges have conditions.

Those who refuse should face weaker trade terms, tighter visa rules and more scrutiny of their banks. Companies that help Iranian trade should lose U.S. contracts, capital markets and banking links.

Trump’s message is clear: Help keep Iran open for business and America will close its doors to you.

This effort needs transparency. Congress should make a bipartisan “Naughty and Nice List” naming countries, banks, refiners, shippers, insurers and middlemen that either isolate Iran or help it evade pressure.

The “nice” list should name those who close Iranian accounts, stop buying its oil, expose front companies and enforce sanctions honestly. The “naughty” list should name those moving Iranian money, disguising cargo, processing oil sales or supplying dual‑use tech.

Update it each month. Publish the names. Make executives, ministers and heads of government explain their actions.

That may sound theatrical. Good. Theater draws attention – and attention creates accountability. Governments and firms rely on complexity, deniability and public boredom to keep unwanted ties. Bring those ties into daylight.

There must be a reputational cost as well as an economic one. Leaders who keep trading with Iran must explain why profit beats stopping nuclear spread, terrorism and attacks on shipping.

Europe must stop pretending its ties with Tehran are neutral. Money is fungible. Every deal that gives Iran hard cash strengthens the Revolutionary Guard, missiles and proxy wars.

The same applies to Asian energy buyers, flag registries, ports, insurers and banks. If they help Iranian trade, they become part of Iran’s economic infrastructure and should be treated as such.

China is the ultimate test. Beijing cannot enjoy full U.S. market benefits while feeding Tehran’s lifeline. Chinese refineries, banks, traders and shippers dealing with Iran should face direct U.S. restrictions.

If Trump backs off when a major Chinese firm is named, it becomes another slogan. If he follows through, the impact will be swift and global.

Critics will call this escalation. They label almost any U.S. leverage move as escalation. In fact, it is the opposite of what a warmonger would do.

A warmonger would send hundreds of thousands of troops into Iran, occupy it and spend generations rebuilding. Trump instead uses America’s economic power to avoid a major war.

Israel should not be stopped from taking covert gloves off.

Israel has the intelligence, capability and motive to disrupt Iran’s nuclear program, missiles, procurement networks and proxies. The U.S. should give intelligence, logistics, missile defense and strategic help while letting Israel do the hard covert work.

If Tehran keeps its aggression, selective actions against commanders, nuclear architects and operational leaders must stay ready. This is not a call for indiscriminate war or occupation. It is a plan to hold the people who direct Iran’s aggression personally accountable while slowly dismantling their capabilities.

Leaders who keep trading with Iran must explain why profit beats stopping nuclear spread, terrorism and attacks on shipping.

In plain terms, let Israel handle much of the wet work. America should set strategy, organize allies, enforce the economic quarantine and stop China, Russia or anyone else from rescuing Tehran.

This is burden‑sharing with teeth.

The endgame must be clear. Iran must drop any path to a nuclear weapon, dismantle dangerous enrichment, stop attacking shipping and end funding of proxy wars. Any relief must be conditional, reversible and tied to verified actions – not vague promises Tehran can twist.

For years, the foreign‑policy establishment said the Iran problem is terribly complicated. Some parts are. The central choice is not.

Why should America protect countries that fund the threat? Why treat market access as an entitlement? Why let the U.S. bear military risk while others keep profitable ties with the enemy?

Trump is asking the right questions.

If he builds a true economic quarantine, forces allies to choose, empowers Israel to eliminate the biggest threats and keeps U.S. military action selective and decisive, this could be his finest hour.

It would also expose the hypocrisy of those who call Trump a warmonger. He is not leading with an invasion but with economic power, demanding allies finally join the effort.
