A viral post showed a woman setting up her domestic worker’s quarters in a four‑room Build‑To‑Order flat by placing a bed in the home office and adding a partition. Netizens quickly criticised the cramped set‑up, raising concerns about the helper’s privacy and dignity.

The Ministry of Manpower says employers must give helpers a separate room, or at least ensure enough space and privacy when a separate room is impossible.

Many dual‑income families live in average‑sized flats that also house young children, elderly parents or relatives with special needs. One family with two children and an 86‑year‑old father uses the study as the helper’s sleeping area, while another household lets a helper share a room with a child because there is no spare bedroom.

Nearly three in four households employing helpers benefit from the concessionary levy, because they have a child under 16, a senior aged 67 or above, or a person with disabilities, according to the Ministry of Manpower.

Choosing a nursing home or a government‑supported preschool can be expensive. Monthly nursing home fees start from S$3,900 before subsidies, and full‑day infant care at these preschools costs between S$746 and S$1,256 after basic subsidies.

Singapore is a super‑aged society, with one in five citizens aged 65 and above. As the population ages, more families will need help caring for elders, but the shortage of living space makes hiring a live‑in helper one of the few practical options.
