Boston Accepts Edmonton Marathon Times Even Though Course Was Longer

A measurement error in the Edmonton Marathon could have ruined runners’ hopes for Boston, but the Boston Marathon says the original times are still valid.

The Edmonton Marathon course was measured 674.7 metres longer than the official 42.2‑kilometre distance because a detour was needed for construction. More than 10,000 runners signed up for the race on Sunday.

The Boston Athletic Association wrote in an email that any runner who met the Boston qualifying time can still qualify, as long as the result is official and not changed. "So long as the results and times are official and unadjusted, they could be used for the qualifying," said Chris Lotsbom, the association's media director.

Boston organizers also said they will not accept any times that have been adjusted to remove the extra two‑thirds of a kilometre.

One runner, Brittney White, finished in 3 hours 25 minutes, which meets the qualifying standard for her age group. She received an email from Boston confirming her qualification.
