Alcohol Almost Destroyed Me, But I Got Help

Jess Fry's story is one of hope.

Jess Fry, a 42-year-old woman, had a good job and a family. But she became addicted to alcohol and her life started to fall apart. She could not work or take her kids to school, and she felt very alone and sad.

Jess says she kept hitting rock bottom. She said, 'Everything started to fall apart. I could not function on a daily basis. I could not go to work. I could not do the school run. My life had become completely unmanageable.'

Jess was very low, but she jumped at the chance to go to rehab. She said, 'I did not really hesitate. I just said, What do I need to do? because I knew that I could not get through another day as I had been doing.'

Jess realized her life was unmanageable, so she checked into a rehab clinic in Gloucestershire. She stayed for over a month, went through detox, and started her recovery, which was like waking up from a bad dream.

On her fifth day at the clinic, Jess felt like she woke up from a nightmare. She had spent years not wanting to wake up tomorrow, but now she wanted to wake up and live a life in recovery. She realized she had a future and a place in the world again.

After leaving the clinic, Jess stayed in touch with the community and became a volunteer. She later got a job as a senior recovery practitioner and now works with people who are starting their own recoveries.

Alcohol almost ruined Jess's life.

Jess's job now involves working one-on-one with people who are starting their recoveries. She helps them with medical appointments and aftercare plans, and she helps them understand why they are getting treatment and how to move forward.

Jess's own experiences inform her work, and she knows how people feel when they first walk into rehab. She said, 'I remember being in a room, not knowing what to do, what to think, consumed with guilt and shame, and not knowing where to even begin.'

Now, almost two years sober, Jess has rebuilt her life and family relationships. She hopes her story will inspire others to seek help. She said, 'My advice is to be honest and ask for help. Just pick up the phone, and you will not look back.'

Jess said, 'Life got very dark for too long, but I am not scared to talk about what happened to me. Admitting I had a problem and doing something about it was the hardest thing I have ever had to do.' The manager at the clinic said, 'We hope Jess's story will inspire those who are controlled by alcohol addiction.'

Jess has been on an extraordinary journey and is now a valued member of the clinic staff. She uses her own experiences to put people at ease when they first arrive.
