Southeast Asia's Largest Airport Upgrades Baggage System

Malaysia Airports' managing director, Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, said work started on Wednesday to replace the baggage reclaim belt at Carousel E. Similar work at Carousel F will start on August 31.

The upgrade of both carousels is expected to be finished by January 2027. Then, the modernization program will continue in phases.

Mohd Izani said the airport will stay open while it is being upgraded. The airport is working with airlines and partners to minimize disruption.

Passengers may experience some temporary congestion, but baggage delivery will continue as normal.

Four temporary baggage collection areas will be used to manage volumes and ease congestion.

Signs will direct passengers to the collection points. Baggage and customer service teams will assist travelers.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the largest in Southeast Asia, covering 100 square kilometers. It is a key hub for air travel.

Malaysia had 17.5 million foreign tourists in the first five months of this year. It remains the most visited country in Southeast Asia, according to Deputy Tourism Minister Chiew Choon Man.
