0:01-Hi, Jimmy! -Welcome back, welcome back.
0:03I always love having you on the show.
0:05I want to talk to you about -- -Thanks for having me.
0:07-I want to talk to you about Broadway, "Oh, Mary!"
0:09I want to talk to you about "Widow's Bay."
0:11How are the family? How are the kids?
0:14-They're great. I have two daughters.
0:15They're 5 and 2. -Yeah!
0:17-Yeah. -[ Cheers and applause ]
0:19Yeah. Their names are Mary and Maggie,
0:21which is so confusing, and I don't know why
0:23I named two kids with the same letter.
0:26-Too late now. -Yeah, I know.
0:27The younger one was supposed to be Georgia,
0:29and then my nurse, whose name was Maggie --
0:31And I haven't told her this.
0:32So, Maggie at Mount Sinai East,
0:34I named my daughter after you because I was on so many drugs.
0:38[ Cheers and applause ]
0:39-But you did it. -Yeah. Yeah.
0:42But they're great.
0:43I mean, I grew up with two brothers,
0:46and so I thought two daughters would be, like,
0:48whispering feelings and braiding each other's hair.
0:51I live in fear of them. -Oh, wow.
0:54-Yeah. They're like two Joe Pescis.
0:57Makeup had to cover --
0:58I have, like, scratches all over me.
1:00-Yeah. -Wow. Oh, my God.
1:01-This is a cry for help. -Okay, yeah.
1:02Well, that's what our show is here for.
1:04-Yeah, yeah. -I want to congratulate you.
1:05You just got nominated for an Emmy for "Widow's Bay."
1:07Not too shabby, bud. -Thank you.
1:10-Yes! -[ Cheers and applause ]
1:11-This is your fourth Emmy nomination.
1:13-Yes. Yeah.
1:15-You're very good. People love you.
1:16What is that like on the morning
1:18when they're announcing the nominations?
1:19-Are you nervous? -Well, I'm only in one episode.
1:21I'm nominated for the Guest Comedy category.
1:25So I sincerely was not expecting it at all.
1:29And I told my husband -- I was like,
1:30"I got nominated for an Emmy today."
1:32He goes, "Whoa. For what?"
1:34It's like, "There's a guest category."
1:37-Yeah, yeah. "There's lots of things I've done."
1:39Yeah, it could be numerous things.
1:41But now that you're nominated for all these awards
1:43and you're on Broadway, do you get recognized on the street
1:45and everyone's like, "Yo, Betty Gilpin"?
1:47-I get recognized sometimes.
1:48I feel like I'm in a certain category
1:51where there's like five of us that really look --
1:54We all look like Benedict Cumberbatch's
1:56mean sisters.
1:58Like, there's, like, interchangeable --
2:00Like, we all get recognized as each other.
2:03And one time, I was at some event and I was in line at --
2:07You know, there's, like, you do the red carpet
2:09and then you get in line for whatever to enter.
2:11-Another photo -- -Yes.
2:13And there was a producer-y, headset-y,
2:15wonderful person who came over and was like,
2:17"Oh, you don't have to wait in this line.
2:19Like, come over and link arms with me."
2:21And she was like, "I just have to say --"
2:22And she got choked up.
2:23She was like, "You're just --"
2:25You're one of my favorite actors, and your work --
2:26Every time you're on screen, you just hit it out of the park.
2:29And I just think you're kind of changing the art form."
2:31And, like, my ego is, like, bigger and bigger and bigger.
2:33I was like, "Are we hearing this? This is amazing."
2:36And she leads me to what I thought was my table
2:38and leads me to the chair, and it just says "Jodie Comer."
2:40And she was like, "Have a great night, Jodie."
2:42I was like, "Thank you so much."
2:44-"I'll take it, but I'm not --" -Just gonna take it. Yeah.
2:47-You get mistaken for Jodie Comer?
2:49-All the time, which is such a compliment to me.
2:51She's incredible and, like, one of our finest actors.
2:54Actually, at the DMV like two days ago, this guy --
2:58I was waiting in the long --
3:00you know, hours-long line at the DMV,
3:02and a cop was like, "'Killing Eve'!"
3:05And I was like, "Oh, yeah."
3:06And he was like, "You're Jodie Comer."
3:08And I was like, "If I were Jodie Comer,
3:10could I cut this line?"
3:12And he goes, "Nope." And I was like, "Okay."
3:14-Yeah. You go, "Well, then I'm not Jodie Comer, okay?
3:17I'm Betty Gilpin and I will wait in this line."
3:18-I should have done a British accent. Yeah.
3:19-Yeah, yeah. Just do it.
3:21But last time you were on the show,
3:22you were getting ready for "Oh, Mary!"
3:24-Yes.
3:25-You were taking over for Cole Escola.
3:27-Yeah. -And you crushed it, buddy.
3:29Congratulations. -Thank you. Thank you so much.
3:31Thanks. The time of my life.
3:33Thank you.
3:34-Great reviews. Everyone loved it.
3:36And then I saw this photo came out of people
3:39that come to see you after the show.
3:41-Yes. -Do you like knowing that anyone's coming to see you?
3:43-Well, I feel like, earlier in my theater career,
3:46I was more neurotic, if you can fathom it.
3:51But I wouldn't want to know who was coming.
3:53But "Oh, Mary!", it's such a collective kind of
3:56concert-of-joy experience that there's not as much room
3:59for personal neuroses, I would say.
4:01But I had a rule.
4:03I was like, "I think if, like, Meryl Streep comes,
4:05I don't want to know.
4:06I'll just be in my head."
4:07And the last week of "Oh, Mary!",
4:09I was doing "Office Romance," this J. Lo rom-com,
4:11and I knew she was coming that night.
4:13And the person doing my wig, who was new, was like,
4:16"Oh, you know J. Lo's coming.
4:17Well, then you know Meryl Streep's here, too."
4:19And I was like, "No!"
4:21-Don't tell me the one rule! -Yes. Yeah.
4:24-The one and only. Look at this.
4:25-Yeah. -Meryl Streep. Look at that.
4:26-It was quite a night, yeah. -[ Cheers and applause ]
4:29-Come on, bud!
4:31-Yeah. But that -- -Martin Short.
4:33-Yes. -J. Lo.
4:35-This is Tony Macht. He plays Simon.
4:37He's been in it since the original production.
4:39And he told me -- He was like, "Every night,
4:41just peak out and pick one person in the audience
4:43and do it for them."
4:45So the night that I was freaking out about Meryl, I was like,
4:47♪ "The woman in the hoodie with glasses, this is for you" ♪
4:50Like, just some random person in the second row. Yeah.
4:53-Oh, I thought Meryl Streep was wearing a hoodie and glasses.
4:54-Oh, that would be awesome.
4:55-That's so fun. -Yeah, she's that good.
4:57-Yeah. -Maybe it was her.
4:59-Yeah. Well, you crushed it. And now here you are.
5:01"Widow's Bay" nominated for 19 Emmys.
5:04-I know it. It's amazing. -Holy moly!
5:06-Yes. Yeah. Yeah. -[ Cheers and applause ]
5:09Being in one episode, I feel like
5:11I can properly brag without it being bragging about myself.
5:15Or maybe it's stolen valor, but I'm just so -
5:18It's given me renewed faith in our industry
5:20that something this unique and original
5:23and strange is having such mainstream success.
5:26Everybody should watch it if they haven't.
5:27It's so -- It's -- Yeah. -It's really fun.
5:30-An amazing show. -And here's your character.
5:32This is Sarah Westcott Warren. -Yeah.
5:34-Yeah. And, yeah, I don't want to give it away.
5:36Well, how do we explain who she is?
5:37We can, right? -Well, yeah...
5:39-This is always tricky. -Yes, without spoiling it,
5:42it's a flashback episode.
5:44The rest of the show is contemporary,
5:46but this is sort of the origins of the town.
5:48And I'm in my sobbing-in-a-bonnet era
5:50of my career.
5:51And, yeah, this is where I belong.
5:55-It's a super -- It's funny, but it's also spooky?
5:58-Yes. -The guy wants to
6:00have people, tourists, come to the town.
6:02-Yes. Yeah.
6:03Yeah, he's the mayor of Widow's Bay,
6:05and, yeah, it's a haunted island, and --
6:07-And he doesn't want to tell anyone that it's haunted
6:08because he wants people to move there.
6:09-Yes. Right. Yeah.
6:10Played brilliantly by Matthew Rhys.
6:12And, yeah, Kate O'Flynn, Dale Dickey.
6:14Yeah. Amazing.
6:16-I want to show everyone a clip.
6:17Here's Betty Gilpin in "Widow's Bay." Take a look.
6:20-Richard is alive!
6:26-Yes, we noted that with some distress.
6:30Be not afraid. This committee can be trusted.
6:33-Well, then you all must listen.
6:35He is not consorting with the devil.
6:37He is the devil.
6:38I saw him struck with a knife
6:40again and again, but he died not.
6:41For the good of every man, woman, and child,
6:42you must make haste and stop him immediately!
6:49There is a secret tunnel that leads to the house.
6:50There is a well at the far southeastern edge
6:52that will grant to serve you passage.
6:54You must send 10 good, strong men.
6:56[ Sniffles ]
7:00-[ Laughs ] That's how you do it.
