0:38super responsive to the child. They're

0:40always there to offer comfort, to be

0:43there for the child. We let social media

0:45companies take over our kids' social

0:46lives and they've harmed our kids'

0:48social lives and their mental health. We

0:51let ed tech companies take over our

0:52kids' schools

0:54and they appear to be doing more harm

0:56than good. Now, AI companies are coming

0:59for their relationships, to be their

1:01friends, their therapists, and even

1:03their sexual partners.

1:06What could go wrong?

1:08And some of you may be thinking, "Oh,

1:10hold on a second. I want my child to be

1:14successful in the digital future, in the

1:16digital workplace.

1:18So, why not give them a head start?" Two

1:20reasons. The first is that these

1:23technologies are extremely easy to use.

1:27Your kid doesn't need a 10-year head

1:29start to master social media and AI.

1:34And second,

1:36because now we know that being a digital

1:39native does not confer an advantage. For

1:43many kids, it's a curse because it

1:45messes with the kids' attention systems

1:48and their motivational systems.

1:51It teaches them that there's always a

1:52little bit of reward, always a little

1:54bit of dopamine available, just one

1:56swipe away. and that undermines the

1:59ability to do difficult or sustained

2:01cognitive work,

2:03like reading a book. If we want our

2:06children to be successful

2:08in the digital future,

2:10we need to protect them from the damage

2:12being done in the digital present.
