0:00Now, to recap, on Tuesday night, the
0:01Canadian government announced tariffs on
0:03goods exported from the United States to
0:05Canada with rates of up to 50%. The move
0:09is widely seen as Canada's retaliation
0:11against the United States 50% tariff on
0:13Canadian goods exported to the US
0:15following the collapse of tariff
0:17negotiations between the two countries
0:18in Washington, D.C. late last week. And
0:21here is a report from Vietnam
0:23Television's correspondent in the United
0:25States.
0:29>> Around 700 US-made products, ranging
0:32from honey, cheese, and fish to
0:34smartphones and steel, are now subject
0:36to Canadian import tariffs. Canada says
0:39these are among the products most
0:41affected by US tariffs in retaliation
0:44for Washington's 50% tariff on roughly
0:46$20 billion worth of Canadian imports
0:49after trade talks broke down last
0:51Friday.
0:53>> Today, I'm announcing that Canada will
0:55match the United States tariffs dollar
0:57for dollar, rate for rate.
1:01Effective September 8, Canada will
1:03impose counter tariffs of up to 15, 25,
1:07or 50% on 27.6 billion in imports from
1:12the United States of America.
1:15For each product, our tariff would match
1:17the American tariff on the same type of
1:21Canadian good.
1:22>> Tensions could continue to escalate as
1:25US President Donald Trump has announced
1:27plans to raise tariffs on Canadian cars,
1:30trucks, auto parts, and steel to 50%
1:33effective January 1st, 2027. Businesses
1:37and residents on both sides of the
1:39border are calling for tensions to ease
1:41and for trade between the two countries
1:43to return to normal.
1:44>> See a lot of threats in the short term
1:46with with tariffs on both sides going
1:49up, and then
1:51the business community, as well as folks
1:53in the states along the border and the
1:55provinces on the other side of the
1:56border, We'll put pressure on the
1:58government to and and
2:00on both sides to say let's come to some
2:02agreement because this is ridiculous for
2:03both of our economies.
2:05>> US and Canada are long ally and close
2:07partner with deep tie and many common
2:10interest.
2:11But if the tariffs continue for too
2:12long, they could end up hurting both
2:14sides.
2:15In a North America economy as a deeply
2:18interconnected as it is today, one side
2:21victory could come at cost for both
2:23sides.
2:24That's it for Vietnam today.
