The team published their findings in the peer‑reviewed journal Science Advances, listing Barry as a co‑author. The paper announces the discovery of a decagon‑shaped atmospheric wave encircling Saturn’s south pole.
This decagon is the first large jet pattern observed in Saturn’s southern hemisphere. It mirrors the famous hexagonal wave at the north pole that Voyager spacecraft first documented in 1980‑81.
Professional telescopes such as Hubble cannot monitor Saturn continuously, leaving observational gaps. Barry’s consistent, high‑resolution backyard data filled those gaps, allowing researchers to confirm the wave’s existence and track its evolution.
The discovery highlights how meticulous amateur observations can reach the quality needed for world‑first scientific breakthroughs, expanding our understanding of Saturn’s complex atmospheric dynamics.
