Melbourne‑born Professor Tristan Buckmaster found himself at the centre of a heated dispute with OpenAI after the AI firm announced it had solved the Navier‑Stokes problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize challenges.

OpenAI said its researchers guided AI agents to produce a solution to the Navier‑Stokes equations, a problem that carries a US$1 million prize.

Buckmaster accused OpenAI of trying to “gazump” him and his research partner, Levent Alpöge, by offering to let him publish the solution while omitting Alpöge’s name.
