From an Overgrown Lot to the Pioneer Court Community Garden

About thirty years ago, Mario Minuzzo looked at an overgrown piece of land behind his Adelaide home and imagined a garden there. He said a red‑bellied black snake that entered his house on Christmas morning made him think about changing the space.

With permission to mow and care for the area, the garden was officially started in 1996. Today it covers just under one hectare, holds more than 40 garden plots, has about 75 members, and contains almost 400 fruit and nut trees and vines.

Minuzzo, who is now 88, said his Italian heritage inspired the garden’s design. He compared it to an Italian piazza, a place where people meet and talk, and the garden now attracts members of many ages, cultures, and gardening experience.

Garden members grow extra fruit and vegetables and give the surplus to Pathway Community Centre. That centre works with OzHarvest to provide food for families who need it.

The garden was honoured with the 2022 City of Tea Tree Gully Australia Day Award for Outstanding Community Group of the Year. It also plans to create a native nursery to help restore areas damaged by the pine‑scale insect.
