A 'we first' Singapore starts with small actions

You are on a crowded train during rush hour. The doors open, but no one moves to let others in. You think about moving, but you're getting off soon. What do you do?

This is a small decision, but it adds up when many people make it. It can make things easier or harder for everyone.

Many commuters are frustrated when people don't give up their seats or move in. They also don't like it when people play music loudly.

Policies and laws can also play a role. People are more willing to contribute when they think the system is fair.

The law can shape expectations and create conditions for cooperation.

A new law makes food donation easier by limiting liability. This supports efforts to reduce waste and help those in need.

Singapore could consider laws to protect rescuers and volunteers from lawsuits. This has been done in other places.

When conflicts happen, mediation can help resolve issues and support social stability. It creates space for dialogue and problem-solving.

The government can't force a 'we first' society. It's up to Singaporeans to decide.

Most Singaporeans value kindness and helping others. But if we think others won't act that way, we might not either.

When we see selfish behavior, we might feel justified in doing the same. But the opposite is also true - kindness can be the norm.

We don't need a special day to remind us to be kind. As we approach National Day, let's take small steps to show care for others.
