What Magdeleine Vallieres Mill’s Story Teaches About Nutrition and Hormonal Health for Elite Cyclists

Last year Magdeleine Vallieres Mill surprised the cycling world by winning the women’s elite road‑race world championship in Kigali, Rwanda, earning the coveted rainbow jersey.

She will try to repeat that triumph at the 2024 World Championships in Montreal, becoming the first Canadian ever to defend a world title on home soil.

Soon after her victory, Vallieres Mill revealed that she had stopped having her period because she was not eating enough to match the demands of elite training and racing.

The issue was brought to her attention by the nutritionist on her professional team, EF‑Education‑Oatly, who explained that insufficient fuel can disrupt hormonal balance.

“I didn’t know that I needed to eat so much on and off the bike. Your body starts to shut down and you can lose your period. That is what happened to me,” she said, noting that the problem had been hidden for years.

Since then she has changed her routine, prioritising proper nutrition, recovery and regular monitoring of her menstrual health, and she now speaks openly about the experience.

Vallieres Mill hopes that by sharing her story, younger riders will understand the importance of fueling the body correctly and will avoid the same mistake, showing how nutrition and hormonal health are essential for sustained elite performance.
